Italy is increasingly at the center of international interest as a wellness and long-stay destination for the over-65 population, also thanks to the favorable tax regime provided for by art. 24-ter of the TUIR. This trend opens up new models of senior residential accommodation and long-stay medical-thermal tourism, in line with global demographic changes.
By 2050, there will be over 3.2 billion people over 50 in the world; in Europe, life expectancy will exceed 80 years for both sexes.
In 2023, according to the European Commission, there were 140 million tourists over 60 in Europe (almost four times more than in 2010).
Senior travellers have greater spending power, more free time and are motivated to discover new destinations in a conscious and sustainable way.
According to the Silver Centricity and Tourism (Lattanzi) study, over 70% of European senior tourists choose destinations that guarantee accessible healthcare and certified spas, to protect comfort, safety and therapeutic continuity.
Italy is establishing itself as a privileged destination for foreign retirees thanks to:
- a favorable tax regime;
- a high quality of life, combining cultural heritage, landscape and gastronomy;
- a network of accessible health and spa services, spread throughout the territory;
- a mild climate, ideal for active and healthy lifestyles in old age.
